How to play FPL with friends (and what to do when there are two of you)

Fantasy Premier League is a better game with people you know in it, and the Premier League gives you two ways to do that: a private mini-league in the Classic game, which takes a minute, and an FPL Draft league, which takes an evening and changes the whole season. This page covers both, plus the parts the help pages leave out: weekly winners, forfeits, why leagues thin out by November, and the honest answer for a group of two. It also says where DraftIcon PL, our own weekly draft game, fits when the group is small or the season has already gone quiet.

The one-minute version

A private FPL league in a minute

In the Classic game, one person creates a private league and gets a code. Everyone else enters the code and is in. Nothing else changes: each manager still plays the same global game with the same squad, the mini-league is simply a second table that only shows your group. You can create the league before the season or in week twelve, and a friend who joins late brings their existing team and points with them.

When you create it, you choose how it is scored. A Classic mini-league ranks by total points, which is what most groups use. A Head-to-Head league pairs you against one member each gameweek for a win, draw or loss, which turns a season table into a fixture list and is far better at keeping the bottom half interested. The official game also runs cup competitions inside leagues, a knockout that starts partway through the season.

That is genuinely all there is to it, and it is why the Classic mini-league is the default for every office and family in the country. If nobody has handed you a code yet, FPL leagues to join lists every real way in, and the game that needs none. The catch is only visible later: nothing in it depends on anyone else, so nobody notices when half the group stops playing.

The evening version

An FPL Draft league with friends

The second official game is built for a group. In FPL Draft a player belongs to one manager in your league, so you pick squads in a snake draft before the season, and your friends are not a leaderboard but opponents who own the players you wanted. A league holds 2 to 16 teams, the Premier League recommends 8, and the administrator shares a league code that everyone must use before the draft starts, because nobody can join once picking is under way.

What you are signing the group up for: a draft night with a timer, waivers every week, trades with a veto, and no captain. It is the most fun the official game has, and it is also the version that needs everyone to still care in March. The full rules, including this season's new redrafts, are on FPL Draft explained; how to rehearse the night is on the mock draft page.

What keeps a league alive

Weekly winners, forfeits and prizes

A season table has one winner in May and a lot of people with nothing to play for by Christmas. The groups that stay lively all borrow the same trick: they make the week matter. Whether the official game is weekly at all is its own question, answered on is FPL weekly? The official game shows each manager's gameweek points inside the league, so the weekly winner is right there; the rest is what your group builds on it.

RitualHow it usually runs
Weekly winnerHighest gameweek score in the league, announced in the chat on Monday. Costs nothing and is the single best retention trick there is.
Weekly forfeitLowest score buys the coffees, picks the pub, or wears the shirt. Keep it small enough that nobody quits over it.
Monthly managerBest four-gameweek stretch. Gives the bottom of the table a fresh race every month.
Season prizeWhatever the group agrees in August. The official game runs its own prizes for the top scorers overall; inside a private league it is between you.

A word on money. The forfeits people search for are coffees and embarrassment, not cash, and that is the right instinct: the moment a league has a pot, it has a treasurer, a dispute and a reason to stop. Fantasy football without gambling is the longer version of that argument.

The question nobody answers

Can two people play FPL together?

Technically, yes, in both games. A Classic mini-league with two members works fine, it is just two totals next to each other, and the tension is whatever the two of you bring. FPL Draft accepts a league of two, but the format loses its point: with more than 600 players in the pool and 30 of them owned, there is no scarcity, so the draft is a formality and the waiver wire is a shop with everything in stock.

What a pair actually wants is a duel: a contest with a result this weekend, not a table that separates in April. The official games do not have one. Head-to-Head scoring comes closest, but with two teams every gameweek is the same fixture, and it still runs over nine months.

That is the gap we built for, and the rest of this page is honest about it. The 1v1 page goes into the duel itself; the couples page is the same idea for the most common pair of all.

The part every group learns once

Why leagues go quiet by November, and the fixes that work

It is not that people stop liking football. It is that a season table stops rewarding attention: by November the top three are decided, the bottom three have nothing to gain, and the middle cannot move. In a Draft league it is worse, because a manager who drifts leaves a squad rotting with players the rest of you cannot get at.

Three fixes actually work. Head-to-Head scoring, chosen at setup, gives every manager a fixture every week. Weekly rituals, above, give the week a winner regardless of the table. And a second, shorter game alongside the season one, so that the friends who have fallen off the table still have something to play on Saturday. That third fix is what the rest of this page is about, and it is ours.

Where we come in, and where we do not

A game for the group that fits in one weekend

Full disclosure, this is our own game. DraftIcon PL is a Premier League draft that lasts a single gameweek. Each of you drafts an eleven from packs of cards, the real matches score it, you are ranked against your friends, your country and the world, and on Monday it is over and you draft again. There is no league to found and nobody to wait for: a friend who joins in gameweek twenty is on level terms with everyone that week.

For a pair, or up to four people in the same room, there is a duel mode that runs on one phone with nothing stored on a server and no account. For a group spread across cities, the online side ranks you among the friends you add, every gameweek, and the ranking resets weekly, which is the whole point.

What it is not: a replacement for a Draft league's scarcity, trades and veto. If your group has eight people who will still care in May, run FPL Draft, and run this on the side. If your group has three, or had eight in August, this is the one that still works.

What that looks like

Draft on Friday, settled by Monday.

Real footage from the app: a pack of cards opens, one gets picked, the turn moves on. Fourteen picks, about fifteen minutes, then the gameweek decides it.

The usual answer

Run both

The season league is where the long argument lives, and it should. The weekly draft is where the Saturday lives, and it does not care who is top of the table. Groups that run both find the season league lasts longer, because nobody has to quit the chat to stop playing.

  • Classic mini-league: a code, a minute, everyone in
  • FPL Draft: 2 to 16 managers, one draft night, a season of consequences
  • DraftIcon PL: any number, every gameweek, over by Monday

Quick answers

How do I invite friends to FPL?

Create a private league in the Classic game and share the code it gives you; anyone who enters the code joins with their existing team. In FPL Draft the administrator shares a league code from the status page, and friends must join before the draft starts.

How do I join an FPL league with friends?

Ask for the league code and enter it exactly as shown. In Draft you cannot join once the draft has started or the league is full at 16 teams.

Can you do a two-man fantasy league?

Yes in both official games, though a Draft league of two has no scarcity and a Classic league of two is just two totals side by side. A pair usually wants a duel that is decided this weekend, which is what the DraftIcon PL duel mode is for, on one phone and without an account.

Is FPL free to play with friends?

Yes. Both official games and their private leagues are free, and so is DraftIcon PL, which has no store.

How many friends can be in an FPL Draft league?

Between 2 and 16 including you, with 8 recommended by the Premier League so there are enough top players to go round and the draft does not run too long.

Is there a weekly winner in FPL?

Inside a private league the gameweek points of every manager are shown, so the weekly winner is visible; what it earns is up to your group. The official game runs its own weekly prizes for the top scorers overall.

What are good FPL forfeits?

Small and social: the lowest weekly score buys the coffees, picks the pub, wears the shirt, or writes the group's match report. Keep money out of it; the leagues that last are the ones with nothing to fall out over.

Can a friend join my league late in the season?

In Classic, yes, at any point, bringing their own team and points. In Draft, only before the draft. In DraftIcon PL, any gameweek, on level terms with everyone that week.

What if my friends stop playing halfway through?

Head-to-Head scoring and weekly rituals slow it down, and a weekly draft alongside the season league gives the ones who fell off the table something to play. That is what DraftIcon PL is built for; it is our own game, and it does not replace a Draft league's scarcity.

Draft against your friends this gameweek.
