Two managers want the same forward, and only one of them will have him on Saturday. The waiver system decides which, and it runs on a clock most people only learn about by losing a claim. Rules below from the official Fantasy Premier League Draft FAQs, read on 10 September 2026, then how the week looks in DraftIcon PL, which has no waiver queue at all.
A waiver request asks to replace one player in your squad with an unowned player in the same position. Requests are collected rather than granted on the spot, and they are settled in priority order, usually 24 hours before the gameweek deadline.
If somebody ahead of you wanted the same player, your request simply fails. Once waivers have been processed, free agency opens and whoever gets there first takes whatever is left, right up to the deadline.
Nothing about this system happens in real time, which is the single most common misunderstanding. The week has a shape, and every transaction lands in one of its four parts.
That third rule is the whole strategy. Priority is a currency you spend once, so the question is never only whether you want the player, but whether he is worth going to the back of the line for. Bottom of the table with first claim on a fixture swing is the strongest position in a draft league, and it is the reason a manager having a terrible season is rarely as helpless as the table suggests.
There is also a locked state worth knowing, because it looks like a bug. A player is locked if he was added to the game within 24 hours of a draft or waiver deadline, if he arrived while free agency was running, or if another manager has just dropped him. Locked players come back into reach at the next waiver deadline rather than immediately, which stops a drop being an instant handover to whoever is watching. New signings enter the game within seven days of a transfer being completed, and a player who has left the Premier League stays in your squad on zero points until you replace him.
A proposal, settled later. You name the player coming in and the player going out, and the queue decides whether it happens.
Fair, slow, and the only route to anyone who is locked.
Immediate. After waivers have run, anything unowned can be taken on the spot, position for position, until the deadline.
Fast, unfair, and gone the moment somebody else refreshes the page.
In practice a draft league is two games stacked on top of each other: the patient one that runs on priority, and the twitchy one that runs on being available on Friday night. The rest of the format, from the snake order to the four trade settings, is on FPL Draft explained; the trade side of the transactions page has its own page at FPL Draft trades.

In DraftIcon PL there is no unique ownership, so there is no waiver list to lose a claim on. Every Premier League player is in the pool for everybody, every gameweek, and the cards you are dealt decide your shortlist.
Every gameweek opens with an empty squad and a pack of cards. That is why there is nothing to claim here, nobody to outbid, and no queue to be at the wrong end of.
Bias declared before the argument: the alternative below is ours. The waiver wire is the part of FPL Draft that rewards attention: reading a fixture swing before anyone else, spending priority at the right moment, picking up the deputy goalkeeper the day before he starts. None of that exists in a game where everybody can have everybody.
What we removed with it is the failure mode. A draft league punishes the manager who was busy on Friday, and it punishes them quietly, by giving the player to somebody who was not. In DraftIcon PL being late costs you nothing, because your squad is dealt fresh every gameweek and expires on Monday.
Plenty of people run both, and that is the honest recommendation: keep the league for the craft, use a weekly draft for the weeks when the league is a chore. An FPL redraft is the other way a league resets itself, and a practice draft against our coach bot needs no account.

No claim to lose, no priority to protect, no player to hold on to for eight months. The gameweek ends, the ranking is settled, and Friday deals a new squad.
You submit a request to swap a player in your squad for an unowned player in the same position. Requests are collected and settled together in priority order, usually 24 hours before the gameweek deadline.
A waiver request is a proposal that is settled in the queue and can fail. A free-agent signing is immediate and open to everyone once waivers have been processed, running until the gameweek deadline.
Before the season it is the reverse of the draft order. Once the season starts, the lowest-ranked team has first priority, and any team that wins a claim moves to the end of the queue.
Usually 24 hours before the gameweek deadline, which itself falls 90 minutes before the first kick-off of that gameweek. Trades in your league are settled at the same point.
Because he was added to the game within 24 hours of a draft or waiver deadline, arrived while free agency was active, or has just been removed from another squad. Locked players become available for waiver requests at the next deadline.
You can make the change, but it will not count until the following deadline. Changes to your starting eleven, free-agent signings and substitution priorities made after a deadline apply from the next one.
New players are added to the game within seven days of the transfer being completed, and you claim them with a waiver request. If they arrive close to a deadline or during free agency they stay locked until the next waiver round.
He stays in your squad and scores nothing. To be rid of him you have to replace him, either through free agency or with a waiver request, like any other transaction.
Only for a player you would still want in six weeks. Priority is spent the moment a claim succeeds, and the manager who saves it is the one holding first claim when an injury or a fixture swing makes somebody genuinely valuable.
No. There is no unique ownership, so no player can be claimed away from anyone and there is no queue to join. Squads are dealt from packs every gameweek and expire when it ends. DraftIcon PL is our own product and has no connection to the Premier League.
Free, in the browser, a fresh squad every gameweek. A practice draft runs without an account.
