A short question with a long answer

Is FPL weekly? Sort of, and here is the exact answer

Fantasy Premier League is a season-long game played in weekly instalments. Every gameweek has a deadline, a set of fixtures and a score, and your gameweek rank is real; but your squad, your points and your table carry over from August to May, and that is what people are really asking about. Below: what resets each week and what does not, where the weekly winner lives, and the two games that genuinely start again every gameweek, one of them official and one of them ours, DraftIcon PL.

The structure

How a gameweek works

The Premier League season is cut into 38 gameweeks, one per round of fixtures. Each has a deadline 90 minutes before the first kick-off, and everything you change after it, transfers, captain, bench order, applies from the following gameweek instead. Then the matches are played, your starting eleven scores, and the gameweek closes with your bench substituting automatically for anyone who did not play.

Not every gameweek is one match per club. When fixtures are moved, a club can play twice in one gameweek, a double, and its players score twice; or not at all, a blank, and its players score nothing. A rearranged fixture pays whoever owns and starts the player when it is finally played. Those weeks are where the chips get spent and where the weekly rhythm briefly becomes a planning game.

The honest answer to the question

What resets every week, and what does not

ThingWeekly?What actually happens
Your squadNoThe same 15 players carry over. You get one free transfer per gameweek and can bank unused ones, up to five; extra transfers cost points.
Your pointsNoGameweek points are shown separately, but the season total is what ranks you overall and in your mini-league.
Your captain and benchYesSet fresh before every deadline. This is the weekly decision most people mean when they say they "do their FPL" on a Friday.
Gameweek rankYesEvery manager gets a rank for that gameweek alone, alongside the overall rank.
Weekly winnerYes, if you lookInside a mini-league the gameweek points of each manager are visible, so the weekly winner is there; what it earns is up to your group.
Chips and wildcardsNoLimited per season and spent when you choose, often around doubles and blanks.

So FPL has a weekly rhythm and a seasonal memory. The rhythm is why it fits into a Friday evening. The memory is why a bad September follows you to May, and why the people asking whether FPL is weekly are usually asking whether they can start again.

The weekly game inside the season game

Weekly FPL rankings, winners and prizes

The official game does keep score by the week. Your gameweek points and gameweek rank appear next to the season figures, and the Premier League runs prizes for its top-scoring managers each week and month, alongside the season prizes. Inside a private league, the weekly winner is whoever scored most that gameweek, and the groups that stay lively make something of it: a name in the chat on Monday, a small forfeit for last place, a monthly award for the best run.

What none of that changes is the table. A weekly winner in a season league is a consolation, not a reset, and by November the top three are usually decided. How groups handle that, and what to do with a league that has gone quiet, is on FPL with friends.

The official one that resets

Fantasy Challenge: the Premier League's weekly game

The Premier League's own answer to the question is a separate game. In Fantasy Challenge you start each gameweek with a blank team sheet, a reset budget and a new challenge, which might be an unlimited budget, five strikers, or points for own goals, so every week is a different puzzle and everybody takes it on together. Transfers can be made at any time, with players locking as soon as their match kicks off, you can pick up to five from one club, and after five gameweeks you earn a rank badge that keeps updating.

It is genuinely weekly, it is free, and it is official; the full rules, the three league views and the rank badges are on Fantasy Challenge explained. What it keeps from the season game is the shape: a budget, prices, a full squad selected against a salary cap, and a season-long league to be top of. If the thing you want to lose is the memory, this is the closest the official game gets. If the thing you want to lose is the spreadsheet, keep reading.

Where we come in, and where we do not

The games that start from nothing every gameweek

Full disclosure, this is our own game. DraftIcon PL is a weekly draft: you open packs of Premier League player cards, pick an eleven and a bench, the real gameweek scores it, you are ranked against friends, your country and the world, and on Monday the roster expires. No budget, no prices, no transfers, no chips, and no memory. Gameweek twenty does not know what you did in gameweek nineteen, which is either the best or the worst thing about it depending on what you want from September.

The trade is real and worth naming. There is no long game: no wildcard to plan, no differential to hold for six weeks, no season table to climb. If the planning is what you love about FPL, keep FPL. If you love the Friday and resent the Tuesday, a weekly draft is the Friday on its own. Most people who play it run FPL alongside; the two do not compete for the same hour.

The longer explanation of the format, with the NFL version too, is on weekly redraft fantasy football. Who is in form this gameweek, drawn from the same data, is on the FPL form table.

In hours

How much of a week each one takes

FPL, played properly, is a few minutes at the deadline and as many hours of reading during the week as you let it take; the transfer decision is the sink. Fantasy Challenge is a full team every week, so the deadline takes longer and the reading is the same. A weekly draft is about fifteen minutes to draft and nothing else, because there is nothing to change afterwards; the work is on the card, with a projection and the fixture already on it.

That is not a ranking, it is a description. Some weeks you want the reading. Fantasy football time commitment puts numbers on all of it.

What a weekly draft looks like

Fourteen picks, then the gameweek decides.

Real footage from the app: a pack of cards opens, one gets picked, the turn moves on. About fifteen minutes, and nothing to manage afterwards.

Which one

Pick by what you want to keep

If you want the season to remember you, FPL. If you want a fresh puzzle each week but still a budget and a table, Fantasy Challenge. If you want the draft and the weekend and nothing else, a weekly draft. There is no wrong answer and there is no rule against all three.

  • FPL: weekly rhythm, seasonal memory
  • Fantasy Challenge: weekly reset, official, with a budget
  • DraftIcon PL: weekly draft, no budget, over by Monday

Quick answers

Is FPL weekly?

It is played weekly but scored for the season. Every gameweek has a deadline, fixtures, a score and a rank of its own, but your squad and your points carry over from August to May. The games that truly reset each week are Fantasy Challenge and a weekly draft such as DraftIcon PL.

How many gameweeks are there in FPL?

38, one for each round of Premier League fixtures, though rearranged matches create double gameweeks, where a club plays twice, and blank gameweeks, where it does not play at all.

What is a gameweek in FPL?

One round of fixtures with a single deadline 90 minutes before the first kick-off. Your team is locked at the deadline, scores across all the matches in that round, and automatic substitutions are applied when the last match has been played.

Does your FPL team reset every week?

No. The same squad carries over, and you change it with one free transfer per gameweek, banked up to five, plus paid transfers that cost points. Only the captain, the starting eleven and the bench order are decided fresh each week.

Can you play fantasy football weekly?

Yes, in two ways. The official Fantasy Challenge starts every gameweek with a blank team sheet, a reset budget and a new challenge. A weekly draft such as DraftIcon PL goes further: no budget, no prices, a fresh draft each gameweek, and the roster expires on Monday.

Is there a weekly winner in FPL?

Inside a mini-league, the gameweek points of every manager are visible, so the weekly winner is easy to find; what it earns is up to the group. The Premier League also awards prizes to its top-scoring managers each week overall.

When is the FPL deadline each week?

90 minutes before the first kick-off of the gameweek. Deadlines can move when fixtures move, but not within 24 hours of the scheduled time.

Is Fantasy Challenge weekly?

Yes. Each gameweek starts with a blank team sheet, a reset budget and a new challenge, transfers can be made until each player's match kicks off, and after five gameweeks you earn a rank badge that keeps updating.

What is the difference between a weekly draft and FPL?

A weekly draft has no squad to keep, no budget and no transfers: you draft an eleven for one gameweek and it expires. FPL keeps everything for the season. DraftIcon PL is our weekly draft, and it deliberately lacks the long game that makes FPL what it is.
