FPL forfeits (and the game that makes last place worth playing)

Every good mini-league has one, and the best ones are cheap, public and over in a day. Below are the forfeits groups actually run, plus how the wheel works. Then the part worth your five minutes: DraftIcon PL, where every gameweek starts level, so the manager in last place is one Friday away from winning something.

The short answer

A forfeit works when it is public, quick and funny to watch, and it fails when it is expensive, private or takes a whole weekend to organise. Everything memorable in fantasy football costs about three pounds.

The second rule matters more than the first: agree it in August, in writing, in the group chat. Forfeits invented in May are argued about in May.

Somebody loses every week

Fifty-two verdicts instead of one

A season forfeit is settled once, in May. In DraftIcon PL there is a winner and a loser in every gameweek, which is a lot more chances to owe somebody a coffee.

What mini-leagues actually run

Forfeit ideas, from a laugh to a legend

Sorted by how much the loser has to commit. The first four cost nothing and get used every season; the last two are the ones people are still telling stories about years later.

Free

Team name for a season

The winner renames the loser's team, and it stays for the whole of next year. Every time anybody opens the league table, there it is.

Free

Profile picture of shame

The loser runs a photo of the winner's choosing until the next deadline day. Cheap, visible, and it renews the joke every week.

Free

Write the season review

Last place writes a thousand words on their own campaign and posts it in the chat. Funnier than it sounds, and it keeps the quietest manager involved.

A few pounds

The wooden spoon

A real spoon, engraved if you are feeling generous, that lives with the loser until somebody takes it off them. The best value in the game.

A night out

The full kit walk

Wearing a rival club's full kit to the pub, socks and shin pads included, chosen by the league. The classic, and the reason half these leagues survive to May.

A night out

Charity shop outfit

The league picks the loser's clothes from a charity shop with a fixed budget. Cheap, harmless, and the photos last forever.

Commitment

The haircut

A bleach job or the famous 2002 fringe. Grows out in six weeks, comes up in conversation for six years.

Commitment

Open mic

Five minutes of stand-up at a local night, with the material written by the rest of the league. The hardest one on this list and the one that gets filmed.

Where most groups stop: anything that costs real money, anything involving somebody's job or family, and anything permanent. A forfeit should be a story the loser tells, not one they avoid. If you want the wider set of ways to keep a league lively, fourteen mini league ideas covers the side tables and monthly races that work alongside a forfeit.

Why everyone ends up spinning something

The forfeit wheel, and how to run one

Groups reach for a wheel because it solves the real problem, which is not thinking of forfeits but agreeing on one. Nobody wants to be the person who chose the punishment, and a wheel makes it nobody's fault.

  1. Collect one idea per manager before the season starts. Eight managers, eight slices, and everybody has already consented to their own worst idea.
  2. Bin the two nobody laughed at in the chat. If it did not raise a laugh in August it will raise an argument in May.
  3. Spin it live on a call or in person after the final gameweek, with somebody recording. The spin is the event, more than the forfeit itself.
  4. Set a deadline of two weeks, then it is void. Forfeits that drift into July never happen.

Any free wheel site does the job, and the group chat does the rest. The one rule worth keeping is that the wheel only holds things everybody agreed to in August.

The bit worth reading twice

Why a league needs a forfeit at all

Think about when the forfeit conversation starts. Nobody discusses it in August. It comes up in November, when three managers are out of it, the leader is forty points clear, and somebody realises the second half of the season needs stakes because the table has stopped providing any.

That is the actual problem, and a forfeit is a very good patch for it. It gives the bottom of the table something to avoid, which is not the same as something to win. Everything on this page works, and we would rather you used it than gave up on a league you enjoy.

It is worth naming what the patch cannot do: it never gives last place a reason to open the app on a Saturday morning. That takes a table that resets.

Where we come in

A game where last place is one Friday from first

This is our own game, so weigh it accordingly, but it was built for exactly the week that makes people search for forfeits. In DraftIcon PL every gameweek is its own competition: you draft a fresh squad from packs of Premier League cards, the real gameweek scores it, and on Monday it clears. Nobody is forty points clear of anybody, because the count started on Friday.

The rival sagaPick a rival and the record keeps itself: every meeting, the closest win, the week you will not stop hearing about.

The forfeit still works here, by the way, and it works better: a weekly winner and a weekly wooden spoon give your group fifty-two verdicts a season instead of one. And nobody has to keep a spreadsheet, because the table, the rivalry record and the Hall of Fame update themselves.

What Friday looks like

Fifteen minutes, then the group chat.

Cards are dealt, the clock runs on every pick, eleven and a bench come out of it. Then the gameweek decides, and everyone starts again.

Somebody has to lose it every week

Honest about the trade

Keep the league, add the Fridays

What your mini-league has that we do not is the year. A table you have been staring at since August, a title that means something because it took nine months, and a forfeit whose whole comedy comes from the loser having had all season to avoid it. We are not going to pretend a weekly game replaces that.

What we do is fill in the part where the league stops working, which is the stretch between somebody running away with it and the last deadline. Draft on Friday, settle it on Monday, and go back to your mini-league in between.

Most people who play both keep both. FPL with friends covers the private league itself, head-to-head scoring is the official way to give every manager a fixture, and the mini league ideas are the free rituals that go alongside all of it. If somebody in the group is threatening to walk instead, leaving an FPL league explains what they can and cannot actually do.

Quick answers

What is a forfeit in FPL?

A penalty the group agrees on for whoever finishes bottom of the mini-league, usually something public and embarrassing rather than expensive. It is a house rule, not part of the official game.

What are good FPL forfeit ideas?

The ones that get used every season are free: renaming the loser's team for a year, a profile picture of the winner's choosing, writing the season review, or a wooden spoon that lives on their desk. The bigger ones are the full kit walk, a charity shop outfit and the haircut.

How does a forfeit wheel work?

Everyone contributes one idea before the season, the group cuts the ones nobody laughed at, and the wheel is spun live after the final gameweek. It exists so that nobody has to be the person who chose the punishment.

When should the forfeit be agreed?

In August, in writing, in the group chat. A forfeit invented in May is a negotiation, and the person losing has every reason to argue about the terms.

How far is too far?

Most groups stop at anything permanent, anything that costs real money, and anything that reaches somebody's job or family. A forfeit should be a story the loser tells afterwards rather than one they dodge.

Should the forfeit be money instead?

Money changes the tone from banter to accounting, and somebody always pays late. A three-pound spoon has kept more leagues together than any pot.

What about a weekly forfeit instead of a season one?

It works better for most groups, because it gives the bottom of the table something happening this week rather than a punishment in May. Lowest gameweek score buys the coffees is the version that survives.

Our league is decided already. What now?

Either restart it, by creating a new mini-league that only scores from a chosen gameweek, or add something that resets weekly. Both keep the same friends, and the first one is an official feature most managers have never used.

Is there a game where the table resets every week?

That is what DraftIcon PL does: a fresh draft from packs every gameweek, scored on the real matches, then it clears. Your friends table ranks the average of your three best gameweeks, so a bad run is never fatal.

Is DraftIcon PL free, and is it official?

Free, with no entry fee and nothing to buy, and the practice draft needs no account. It is our own game and it is not an official Premier League product.
