Playing without a league

Solo fantasy Premier League,
draft included

There are two Premier League fantasy games and only one of them can be played alone. Classic FPL you already play solo. FPL Draft you cannot: the Premier League's own rules put 2 to 16 managers in a league, and if too few join, your draft is pushed back a day at a time until they do. This page is about getting the draft without the friends.

The short answer

Four ways to play fantasy Premier League alone

Solo fantasy Premier League is not one question but two, and mixing them up is why the answer is usually unsatisfying. Playing alone is easy, classic FPL has always worked that way. Drafting alone is the hard part, because every draft format in the official game is built around a league.

In action

Solo looks like this in PL.

Real footage from a single player draft: open a pack, pick your player, and the next pick is already running. Nobody to wait for, no league to fill first.

End of the gameweek: rank among friends, rank in your country and rank worldwide
What solo actually looks like

You draft, the gameweek does the rest

Fourteen picks decide a gameweek in DraftIcon PL. Packs of player cards come up, you choose in turns, and what you end up with is a genuine 1-4-3-3: goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders, three forwards, and three more on the bench who do not score. Then Saturday happens. Real Premier League points arrive while the matches run, and the two league tables that matter open automatically, one for your country and one for the planet.

Notice what is missing from that description: anybody else. No commissioner, no invite, no minimum, no draft date to agree on. Rivals exist if you want a name to beat, three of them, pinned to the top of your screen, and that is a switch you flip rather than a hurdle you clear.

  • Fourteen picks, a real 1-4-3-3 plus three on the bench
  • Ranked worldwide and inside your own country
  • Same account as the NFL edition, if you play both
Why a gameweek beats a season when you are alone

Single player FPL, one gameweek at a time

A season-long squad is a commitment made once and paid for repeatedly. You choose fifteen players in August, and from then on you are managing consequences: the striker who lost his place in September, the defender whose club fell apart, the transfer you cannot afford because you already spent the hits. In a mini-league with friends that is the fun, the shared suffering is the product. Alone it is just administration.

A gameweek reset removes exactly that, and it is why solo fantasy Premier League works better weekly than season-long. Every gameweek starts from an empty squad, so a draft that went wrong costs you one weekend instead of a season. It also settles the blank gameweek problem at the source: a player whose club has no fixture is simply not offered in your packs, and if a club plays twice, its players score in both matches.

Practise the draft against the coach bot

Drafting alone usually means there is nobody to ask. The official FPL Draft has a mock draft for exactly that reason, and so does DraftIcon PL: unlimited, at your own pace, and without an account. The difference is what comes after. In the official game the mock is practice for the one draft you get; here it is practice for a draft that comes back every gameweek.

You are not picking blind either. Fixture difficulty sits on the card itself, next to the projected return, so the awkward question of whether a good player has a bad weekend is answered before you commit the pick. Ready? Open the mock draft.

Quick answers about playing FPL solo

How many people do you need for an FPL draft?

At least two. The Premier League's own help pages state that private Draft leagues can have between 2 and 16 teams including your own, and recommend 8 so there are enough top-ranked players to go around. One manager on their own is not an option in the official game.

Can you play FPL Draft solo?

No. FPL Draft is built around a league, and if too few managers have joined by the draft deadline the Premier League pushes the draft back by 24 hours, again and again, until the minimum is met. To draft a Premier League squad on your own you need a game that is built for one player, such as DraftIcon PL.

Is Fantasy Premier League single player?

Half of it. Classic FPL is already a single player game: you pick a squad and are ranked against the world, and mini-leagues with friends are optional on top. FPL Draft is the opposite: without a league of other managers there is no draft and no game.

Can you create a fantasy league by yourself?

You can create the league, but you cannot play it alone: a league needs other managers to fill it. The way around it is not a smaller league, it is a game that needs no league. In DraftIcon PL your gameweek eleven is entered into a global ranking and a ranking for your own country automatically.

Can you play fantasy football with random people?

Yes. In DraftIcon PL you never have to know your opponents: every gameweek your eleven is scored against the whole field, worldwide and inside your own country. Friends are an option you can add, not a condition you have to meet.

What happens in Fantasy Premier League if your player does not play?

In the official game a player who does not appear scores nothing, and in a blank gameweek his club has no fixture at all. DraftIcon PL removes that trap at the source: a player whose club has no fixture is not offered in your packs that gameweek. If a club plays twice, its players score in both matches.

Is DraftIcon PL free?

Yes, free with no ads and nothing to buy. It runs in any modern browser and can be installed as an app. If you already play the NFL edition it is the same account.

Can I start in the middle of the season?

Yes, any gameweek. Every DraftIcon PL gameweek starts from an empty squad, so joining in gameweek 20 puts you on the same line as someone who has played since the opener. In FPL Draft the draft happens once, before the season, and cannot be repeated for a latecomer.

Do I need to be a Premier League expert to draft alone?

No. Every card shows a projection and the difficulty of the fixture, the Research tab ranks the whole player pool, and the mock draft against the coach bot lets you practise as often as you like before anything counts.

The draft, without the league.

Solo fantasy Premier League, free in your browser, and the mock draft needs no sign-up at all.
