Fantasy Challenge explained (and the draft version of the same idea)

Fantasy Challenge is the Premier League's answer to a complaint its main game cannot fix: a season is long and a bad September follows you to May. Every gameweek you pick a new team under a new rule. DraftIcon PL is built on the same weekly idea from the other direction, a draft instead of a budget, and this page sets the two side by side after explaining the official game properly, from its 2026/27 rules, read on 8 September 2026.

In one paragraph

What Fantasy Challenge is

It is a separate game from Fantasy Premier League, run by the same people from the same account, in which you must select a new squad every gameweek. Nothing carries over: no squad, no transfers to save, no chips. Each gameweek comes with a Challenge that changes the rules for everybody that week, such as a different budget or double points for certain players. You still pick a captain, who scores double, and the points for what happens on the pitch mirror the main game unless the week's challenge says otherwise.

The official description is blunter than most guides: a blank team sheet, a reset budget and a new challenge every gameweek, and everyone taking it on together. That last part is the design. Because everybody plays the same challenge, a week where the budget is unlimited or the squad is six players is the same puzzle for the whole world, which makes the weekly ranking mean something.

The part that changes weekly

How a challenge works

The challenge sets the squad you have to build. The rules give the examples themselves: the budget may be different, certain players may score double, the squad might be six players one week and five the next, and there can be extra composition rules, a minimum or maximum of players with a particular characteristic. The requirements are shown at the top of the team page for that gameweek, and a squad is only entered once it is valid for them. The season opens with five gameweeks of six-a-side, and you can pick up to five players from one club.

What this does to the game is worth understanding before you play. In FPL, the craft is finding value the crowd has missed over months. In Fantasy Challenge, the craft is reading a new rule fast and building the best answer to it in a week. It rewards a different manager, and a lot of people who find the main game a grind find this one a relief.

No deadline day

Transfers, locking and deadlines

There is no single deadline. You can change your team and your captain as often as you like before and during the gameweek, and a player locks only when his club's first match of the gameweek kicks off. Once locked he cannot be moved out or made captain. You can even create a team for a gameweek that is already under way, as long as a valid squad of players whose clubs have not yet played is still possible; the game calls that the final gameweek deadline, and it moves with the fixture list.

Prices mirror the main game, rises and falls included, so your squad value can drift from the challenge budget during the week. Any player you move out is sold at the price you paid, and any change has to leave the squad within budget when you save.

Three ways to keep score

Leagues, the three views, and rank badges

Leagues work the way they do in the main game: create one, share the code, up to 25 private leagues, no limit on teams, and you are entered automatically into the global leagues for the whole game, your country and your club's supporters. What is different is that every league can be read three ways.

ViewWhat it counts
GameweekScores reset to zero every gameweek. This is the weekly winner, official and built in.
EventThe sum across a themed event that takes over the game for a stretch of gameweeks, reset when the event ends.
SeasonThe sum of every gameweek, for the people who want a table after all.

After five gameweeks you earn a rank badge that keeps updating with your performance, five stars of progress per badge before promotion to the next one. It is the game's answer to the question every weekly format faces, which is how to feel like you are getting somewhere when every week starts from nothing.

Same account, different game

Fantasy Challenge vs FPL

What changed: the squad resets, the rule changes weekly, there are no chips and no saved transfers, and changes are allowed until each player's kick-off. What stayed: a budget, prices that move with the main game, a captain on double points, the same scoring, and a season league for anyone who wants one. So it is FPL with the memory removed and the spreadsheet kept, which is exactly right for the manager who likes building a squad and hates living with it.

Whether the main game itself counts as weekly, and what carries over there, is answered on is FPL weekly? If you want the differences to all three official games laid out, FPL alternatives does that.

Where we come in, and where we do not

The draft version of the same idea

Full disclosure, this is our own game. DraftIcon PL starts from the same premise as Fantasy Challenge, a new team every gameweek and nothing carried over, and then removes the spreadsheet too. There is no budget and no price on any player. You open packs of Premier League cards, pick an eleven and a bench from what you are dealt against a short clock, and the real gameweek scores it. Fourteen picks, about fifteen minutes, ranked against friends, your country and the world, expired by Monday.

The two games answer different frustrations. If your complaint about FPL is the long memory, Fantasy Challenge fixes it and keeps the budget craft. If your complaint is the budget craft itself, the hour spent fitting fifteen players under a number, a draft removes it: the pack decides what you can have, and your job is to choose well from that. There are no weekly challenge themes here and no rank badges; the weekly table is the whole reward.

What it is not is official, and it has none of the main game's season structure. Plenty of people run all three: FPL for the season, Fantasy Challenge for the puzzle, a draft for the Friday. What a weekly redraft is goes deeper into the format; the practice draft against the coach bot needs no account.

What the draft version looks like

No budget. Just the pack.

Real footage from the app: a pack of cards opens, one gets picked, the turn moves on. Fourteen picks, about fifteen minutes, then the gameweek scores it.

Which one

Pick by what you want to keep

Keep the season: FPL. Keep the budget craft, lose the memory: Fantasy Challenge. Lose both and keep the Friday: a weekly draft. The three do not compete for the same hour, and the official two share an account.

  • FPL: one squad, one season, chips and saved transfers
  • Fantasy Challenge: new squad and new rule weekly, budget kept, rank badges
  • DraftIcon PL: new draft weekly, no budget, ranked by country and world

Quick answers

What is the Fantasy Challenge in FPL?

A separate official game in which you pick a new team every gameweek under a challenge that changes the rules that week, such as a different budget or double points for certain players. Scores can be read per gameweek, per event or per season.

Is Fantasy Challenge free?

Yes. It runs from the same Premier League account as FPL and costs nothing, and the Premier League runs prizes for it.

Do I need to pick a new team every week?

Yes. A new squad must be selected and saved for each gameweek, valid for that week's challenge. Nothing carries over from the gameweek before.

Is there a captain in Fantasy Challenge?

Yes. You select a captain each gameweek who scores double points, and you can change the captain until that player's club has kicked off its first match of the gameweek.

Can I make transfers during the gameweek?

Yes, unlimited ones, before and during the gameweek. A player locks when his club's first match of the gameweek starts, and locked players cannot be moved out or captained. Changes must keep the squad within budget.

How do leagues work in Fantasy Challenge?

Create a league and share its code; you can be in up to 25 private leagues with no limit on teams, and you are entered automatically into global leagues for the whole game, your country and your club. Each league can be viewed by gameweek, by event or by season.

What is a rank badge?

After five gameweeks you receive a rank badge based on your performance, which keeps updating week to week. Each badge has five stars of progress before promotion to the next badge.

Is Fantasy Challenge the same as FPL?

No. It shares the account, the scoring, prices and a captain, but the squad resets every gameweek, each week has a different challenge, there are no chips or saved transfers, and changes are allowed until each player's kick-off rather than at a single deadline.

What is the difference between Fantasy Challenge and DraftIcon PL?

Both start every gameweek from nothing. Fantasy Challenge keeps a budget, prices and a captain, and adds a weekly rule. DraftIcon PL removes the budget entirely: you draft from packs of cards against a clock and are ranked by country and world. It is our own game and it is not official.

Same weekly idea, no budget.

Free, in the browser, and the practice draft against the coach needs no account.
