Too late to join fantasy football?
Not everywhere.
Season-long fantasy football has a door, and it shuts in September. Miss the draft and your remaining options are somebody's abandoned roster or a hurried league that half the group never really commits to. That is a property of the format, not of the sport. Weekly draft games do not have a door at all, and this page is about the difference.
Is it too late to join fantasy football?
It depends entirely on which format you mean, and the honest ranges are narrower than most people expect. Here is what is genuinely still open once the season is running.

Joining fantasy football mid season, without inheriting a mess
A season-long league is a closed economy. Twelve managers divide two hundred players once, and everything afterwards, trades, waivers, the standings, depends on that division holding. A thirteenth person arriving in October has nowhere to stand: there are no unclaimed good players left and no way to hand them any without breaking the league for everybody else. That is why the answer is usually a polite no.
A weekly draft game divides nothing permanently. Everyone opens their own packs, everyone's roster expires on Monday, and the pool refills for the next week. Adding a player in week ten costs the existing players nothing at all, which is precisely why nobody has to ask permission.

What starting late really costs you
Already in a league whose season is finished rather than not started? That is a different problem with a similar answer. Something here is genuinely lost too, and pretending otherwise would be cheap. If you join in week ten you have nine weeks fewer of history: no long-running record, no rivalry with a friend that has been swinging since September, no season total that could still win anything. Those are real, and they only accumulate with time.
What is not lost is the competition itself. Every week is scored on its own, so the ranking for week ten does not know whether you played week nine. You are not entering a race in last place, you are entering the next race. The history starts building from your first week, exactly as it did for everyone else from theirs.
Every week is week one
One draft of roughly fifteen minutes, then the games are played and the week closes with a result: where you finished among your friends, inside your country and worldwide, plus the awards for the best and worst call you made. That happens whether it was your first week or your fifteenth.

Quick answers about joining late
Can I join a fantasy football league late?
It depends how late and on what kind of league. A new season-long league can still be started realistically until about week two or three, as long as everybody drafts together. Joining a league that has already drafted means taking over a team somebody abandoned, with their roster and their record. A weekly draft game has no cut-off at all, because every week begins with an empty roster for everyone.
Can you join a fantasy league mid season?
Only into a seat that already exists. Season-long leagues are sized and drafted before week one, so mid-season the options are an orphaned team nobody is managing any more, or persuading enough people to start a fresh short league. Neither gets you back the draft you missed.
Can you play fantasy football after the season starts?

How late can I start a fantasy football league?

Is there a fantasy football league you can start mid season?
The honest answer is that you do not want a league, you want a game without one. What happens if I take over an abandoned team?
You inherit the roster and the record. That means somebody else's draft, somebody else's injuries and usually a losing streak, because teams rarely get abandoned while they are winning. It is a way in, but it is not a fresh start.
Is it too late to join an FPL league?
Classic Fantasy Premier League lets you enter at any point in the season, though your total starts from the gameweek you join. FPL Draft is different: the draft happens once before the season and cannot be repeated for a latecomer. Do I lose anything by starting in week ten?
Not against the field. Each week is scored on its own, so the ranking for week ten does not know or care whether you played week nine. The only thing a longer run gives you is a season record, and that begins whenever you do.
