Fantasy football with friends. Every week, on DraftIcon.

DraftIcon is weekly fantasy football for you and your friends: one invite link, a fresh NFL draft for everybody every week, and it costs nothing. To be fair to the classic route, a season-long league on ESPN, Yahoo or Sleeper is great when eight to twelve friends really commit; it breaks with small groups, late joiners and a commissioner who runs out of patience.

415 managers drafting · no league to found · friends join any week

The short answer

What is the best way to play fantasy football with friends?

It depends almost entirely on how many of you there are. The format everybody knows, one draft in August and a head-to-head schedule until the playoffs, was built for a full table of managers. Below that, the same software still works, but the game inside it gets thinner with every empty seat.

2friends
Season league struggles

Both rosters end up stacked and the waiver wire stops mattering. A weekly duel fits better: 1v1 fantasy football.

3–6friends
Works, with compromises

Possible on most platforms, but every team is deep. The arithmetic per size is on small fantasy football leagues.

8–12friends
Season league shines

This is what ESPN, Yahoo and Sleeper are made for. If all of them will draft on the same night and stay until December, do it.

In DraftIcon nobody needs a seat: each friend drafts their own team every week, and the group table is built from that.

The group chat argument, with a live score

In DraftIcon you star up to three friends as rivals, and on game day their team sits directly against yours with real NFL points coming in live. Next week you both draft again from nothing, so the rematch is never more than seven days away.

Season-long, step by step

How to set up a fantasy football league with friends

If you do have the numbers, the classic league is a fine choice, and setting one up takes a few minutes. The time goes into the people, not the settings. This is the order that avoids most arguments later.

  1. Count real commitments, not interested replies

Ask who will draft live and still set a lineup in week twelve. Pick the league size from that number, not from the group chat's headcount, and keep it even: head-to-head schedules pair teams, and Sleeper accepts only an even number of teams.

  2. Choose a platform and create the league

On ESPN you select Create League and enter the name, the number of teams, the scoring, the draft type and the draft date. Yahoo walks you through name, scoring type and draft type and time before you click Create League.

  3. Decide the rules before anyone joins

Scoring (standard, half or full PPR), roster shape, trade review and playoff weeks. This matters more than it sounds: ESPN states that once the settings are submitted, they can only be changed with a league vote.

  4. Send the invite link

ESPN lets the league manager copy an invite link or send it by text or email. On Yahoo the commissioner finds Send Invites under the league settings, and only while the league has not drafted yet.

  5. Book a draft night everybody can actually make

A live draft is the best evening of the season and the hardest one to schedule. Fix the date first, then the time zone, then the snacks. Anyone who cannot make it gets the autodraft and usually regrets it.

  6. Settle the money question out loud

Either there is no buy-in, or everybody knows the amount, who holds it and how it is paid out. Silence on this point is how friendships get tested in January. More below.

  7. Agree what happens to a team someone abandons

Somebody always drifts off by October. Decide in advance whether the commissioner sets their lineup, a newcomer takes over, or the team just loses, so nobody has to make it up mid-season.

ESPN

  • Create League, then name, number of teams, scoring, draft preference, draft time
  • Settings after submission: league vote only
  • Invite by link, text or email

Yahoo

  • Leagues hold 4 to 20 managers
  • Private leagues: the creator controls settings and who can join
  • Invites only before the draft; prize leagues charge an entry fee

Sleeper

  • Even number of teams only
  • An odd group needs a workaround with one empty slot all season
  • League size can only be reduced in pre-draft mode

Where friend leagues fall apart

Three ways a group of friends loses the league

Most leagues among friends do not end with a champion. They end with a group chat that quietly stops talking about it. It nearly always comes down to one of these three.

Too few of you

Four friends in a format designed for twelve means every roster is full of starters and nobody ever needs the waiver wire. If it is only you and one other person, that is its own case, written up in fantasy football for two, and for a couple on one sofa there is fantasy football for couples.

Someone arrives late

A friend who hears about the league in week four has no seat and no draft. The best a season league can offer is an abandoned team. Why that is structural rather than bad luck is on joining fantasy football late.

The commissioner gets tired

One person chases invites, schedules the draft, settles trade disputes and collects money. When they lose interest, the league goes with them. Filling the gaps with people you do not know is possible, and leagues with strangers covers how.

The money question

Is fantasy football with friends gambling?

A league without a buy-in is simply a free game with bragging rights. Yahoo, for example, keeps entry fees to its separate prize leagues. Once a group adds a pot, rules depend on where you live, and this page is not legal advice. The full breakdown of what counts as what is on fantasy football without gambling. In DraftIcon there is no entry fee, no prize pool and nothing to buy, so the question never comes up.

How friends play together in DraftIcon

There is no league to create and no commissioner. You send your invite link or your friend code once, and after that you are friends in the app for good. Every week each of you opens packs of six NFL players and drafts eleven, with 60 seconds per pick, whenever it suits you. Players lock at their own kickoff, and on Tuesday every roster starts empty again.

  • Friends' teams appear next to yours, with rivals first and live points
  • Up to three rivals, each with a head-to-head record that counts itself
  • A group table ranked on everyone's average of their three best weeks
  • Give the table a name, if somebody has a joke ready

Because nobody is sharing a pool of players, the group can be any size, and a friend who joins in November drafts on exactly the same terms as everyone who started in September.

Three kinds of group

One game, set up the way your friends actually are

  • Two of you, in different cities. One invite link, then star each other as rivals. Every NFL week becomes a fresh duel, and the lifetime record sits in your rival's profile. The way that turns into a long-running feud is on the fantasy football rivalry page.
  • Two to four of you, in one room. The instant duel runs on one phone with no sign-up at all: you pass it around during the draft and watch the games together.
  • A whole group chat. Everyone adds everyone through the link, and the group table, a podium and a season story fill themselves. On top of that you are placed in a division of eight, drawn from your own country where possible, so there is always a second table of people who are actually playing.

Whatever the size, each week ends with three placings at once: among your friends, in your country and worldwide. How a week runs from first pack to final score is laid out in how DraftIcon works.

Before you send the link

See what your friends will be doing on Tuesday.

A screen recording straight from the app, no edits: the pack tears open, six players, the clock starts, one pick. Your friends see the same thing, just with different cards.

Season story: every week a chapter with each rival duel and its score
What the group keeps

The team resets, the history between you does not

Each week becomes a chapter of the season story, with every rival duel and its score. After eighteen weeks that is a record of who beat whom, and the best of it goes into your Hall of Fame. A season league keeps one table; this keeps the arguments.

Other "with friends" questions

Looking for a different kind of fantasy with friends?

  • Daily fantasy, private contests. If your group plays salary-cap contests one slate at a time, daily fantasy football with friends explains what those apps offer and why the groups tend to fade.
  • Premier League instead of the NFL. For mini-leagues, FPL Draft and football rather than American football, see FPL with friends.
  • A group of five or six. What a small league does to scarcity, size by size, is on small fantasy football leagues.

Fantasy football with friends: quick answers

How do you set up a fantasy football league with friends?

Count who will really play, create a league on a platform such as ESPN, Yahoo or Sleeper with that number of teams, fix the scoring and roster rules before anyone joins, send the invite link, and book a draft date everyone can make. Agree on money and on abandoned teams before the draft, not after.

How many friends do you need for a fantasy football league?

The classic format plays best with eight to twelve teams. Yahoo leagues take 4 to 20 managers and Sleeper needs an even number of teams. Fewer people works technically, but each missing team makes every roster deeper and the waiver wire less relevant. A weekly draft game has no minimum, because nobody shares a player pool.

Can you do a 2 man fantasy league?

Not on Yahoo, whose leagues start at four managers, and on other platforms a two-team league leaves both rosters stacked and the waiver wire empty of meaning. Two people are better served by a weekly duel: both draft a fresh team every NFL week and the higher real-points total wins.

Can you do a 2 person fantasy football league in ESPN?

ESPN lets you choose the number of teams when you create a league, but its help page does not state a minimum, so check the options in the app. Even where two teams are allowed, the format was made for a full league and a two-team version plays very thin.

Is fantasy football with friends considered gambling?

A league without a buy-in is a free game with nothing at stake. A pot collected among friends is where rules start to depend on where you live, and nothing here is legal advice. DraftIcon has no entry fee, no prize pool and nothing for sale.

What is the best fantasy football to play with friends?

For eight to twelve committed friends, a season-long league on ESPN, Yahoo or Sleeper. For smaller groups, uneven numbers or friends who join at different times, a weekly draft game like DraftIcon works better, because every week starts from an empty roster for everybody.

Is there a free fantasy football app to play with friends?

Yes. A season-long league on Yahoo needs no entry fee unless you choose its prize leagues, and DraftIcon is free with nothing to buy: you add friends through an invite link or friend code and play against them every week in the browser.

Can a friend join after the season has started?

In a season-long league only by taking over an existing team. In DraftIcon at any point, with no disadvantage, because each week is a new draft and the group table is built from everybody's three best weeks.

Do my friends need an account to play?

To be added as friends and keep a record against each other, yes, an account with an e-mail address. The duel on one phone and the practice draft against the coach bot need no account at all.

Send the link tonight. Draft against them this week.

No league to found, no draft night to schedule, no buy-in to collect. Just your friends and a new pack every week.
