The NFL Playoff Challenge is gone (here is what replaces it)
It was free, it was official, it needed no league and no draft, and the league discontinued it. Nothing official took its place, so the replacements are scattered across half a dozen sites at half a dozen prices. Below they are measured against the original, and we are on the list too, because DraftIcon is free and the postseason is coming to it.
The NFL Fantasy Playoff Challenge was discontinued and there is no official successor. What the league runs now through its partner is a bracket game, where you pick winners rather than build a roster, so it does not scratch the same itch.
The closest like-for-like replacements are the third-party challenges that copied the format, and one of them is free for small groups. If free matters more than the exact format, a postseason league on a free host or a pick'em pool will do the job.
It really is discontinued
Every January the question comes back and half the answers are people guessing. The league said it plainly on its own support site, and the notice is still there:

Type the old address today and you land on a news page. The league's fantasy game itself has moved to a partner, and the postseason product there is a bracket: free, well run, and built on picking which teams advance rather than on a roster of players. That distinction is the whole reason this page exists.
What the Challenge actually did
Worth writing down, because the replacements each keep some of it and drop the rest. Four things made it what it was.
- It was free. No entry fee, no prize pool to buy into, nothing to subscribe to. That is why casual fans played it and why the paid replacements do not feel like replacements.
- You could enter alone. No commissioner, no league to found, no twelve people to chase over the holidays. You made a lineup and you were in.
- There was no draft. Everybody could pick the same quarterback. Nothing was owned, so nothing had to be scheduled.
- Keeping a player paid more. You could reset your lineup each round, but a player you held as his team advanced earned a growing multiplier. That single rule turned it from a lineup into a bet on the bracket.
The fourth one is the piece people actually miss. Picking a wild card running back who then goes to the Super Bowl was worth more than picking the highest scorer of any single weekend, and that trade-off is what made January interesting.

The three columns are the three things the Challenge got right. Everything here was checked on 10 September 2026, and postseason games change their terms every year, so confirm before you commit a group to one.

If you just want the answer
For a group that wants the Challenge back as it was, use one of the lookalike sites and keep the group under whatever their free tier allows. It is the only option that keeps all four properties at once.
For one person who wants something to play on Wild Card weekend without organising anything, a bracket pool is free and takes a minute, and it is honestly a different game from the one you are missing.
We are not a clone, and it would be odd to pretend
The bottom row of the table says what DraftIcon is, and it is worth spelling out. You open card packs, take ten players under a pick clock, and the weekend settles it. No round multiplier, no bracket to bet on, because a week is our unit and a postseason round was theirs. If the multiplier is the thing you are missing, a lookalike site will serve you better, and you should go and use one.
Two properties do carry over, and they are the ones that made the Challenge popular before anybody discussed its scoring. Nothing to pay, and nobody to recruit before you can start. Postseason play is on the way here as well, shaped like the weekly game rather than like a copy of the old one.
The practical difference is that you do not have to wait for January to find out whether you like it. There is a draft this week.

Cards come out, you choose under time pressure, and the real games do the rest. Then it clears and everybody starts level.

The Challenge never asked you to assemble a group first, and neither does this. Play alone against the world ranking, or star a few friends and let the record between you build itself.

Why nobody has properly replaced it
The Challenge was subsidised. A league promoting its own postseason can afford a free game with real prizes because the game is advertising, and nobody else has that reason to run one. Every replacement therefore either charges for entry, charges for hosting, or asks somebody in your group to do the work instead. That is not greed, it is arithmetic.
Which is also why the honest recommendation above points at somebody else. If what you want is the multiplier and the bracket bet, we do not have it, and pretending otherwise would waste your January.

Can I still play with the same group I used to?
Yes, on any of the options above. The lookalike sites and the free hosts both support private groups, and the community spreadsheets that circulate each January are built for exactly that.
Is DraftIcon a Playoff Challenge clone?
No. It keeps the two things that made the Challenge easy to join, being free and playable alone, but the unit is the week rather than the playoff round and there is no multiplier for keeping a player. If that rule is what you miss, use a lookalike site instead.
